Turning leftovers into cloth
Every harvest leaves behind stalks, leaves and husks, and in many places they are burned in the field. Textile innovators have developed ways to extract usable fibre from those by-products and blend it with cotton, so one harvest yields both a crop and a fabric.
How it's made
Fibre is extracted from the agricultural waste, cleaned and softened, then blended with cotton before spinning. Cotton brings softness and strength; the plant fibres add texture and reduce how much new cotton is needed.
What it's made of
Commonly a blend of 50-80% cotton with 20-50% agricultural waste fibers (such as banana, pineapple, hemp, or jute). The exact blend depends on desired texture, strength, and drape.
How it feels
Soft, breathable, and durable, with unique textures and natural variations due to blended plant fibers. It’ uses agricultural by-products, reducing waste and enhancing circularity in fabric production.
Where it works
Suitable for Apparel (casual wear), Home Textiles (cushion covers, curtains), and Accessories (bags, scarves, hats) due to its natural aesthetic.
Caring for it
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent to protect blended fibers. Air dry is recommended; if using a dryer, set to low heat to avoid shrinkage and damage. Avoid bleach, as it may weaken fibers. Low iron if needed to smooth wrinkles; some fibers may have a natural wrinkle or texture, adding to the rustic look.
