From Jersey to everywhere

Jersey takes its name from the Channel Island of Jersey, where knitted wool was made for fishermen's sweaters for centuries. In 1916 Coco Chanel cut womenswear from jersey, then an underwear fabric, and made it fashionable. Cotton jersey became the undershirt, and after the Second World War the undershirt stepped out on its own as the T-shirt.

How it's knitted

Yarn is looped row after row on a circular knitting machine, producing a seamless tube of fabric. Because every loop can open and close, jersey stretches without elastane and recovers its shape. Heavier yarns and tighter stitches raise the weight, so the same knit can make a fine summer tee or a structured, boxy one.

What it's made of

This version is 50% organic cotton, 50% recycled cotton.

How it feels

Soft, breathable and naturally stretchy, with a clean face that takes prints well.

Where it works

T-shirts, long sleeves, dresses, loungewear and base layers.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold with similar colours, and dry flat or on low to limit shrinkage.
