Cotton without the field

A cotton fibre is a single long cell that grows out of the cotton seed. In the late 2010s biotech start-ups began cultivating those cells directly, steering them to grow fibre. The technology is still scaling up, and lab-grown cotton is only starting to appear in products.

How it's grown

Cells taken from a cotton plant are placed in tanks with water, nutrients and sugar at a controlled temperature. Over several weeks they grow into cotton fibre, which is harvested, cleaned and spun into yarn like conventional cotton.

What it's made of

Primarily composed of 100% lab-grown cotton fibers, which are cultivated through a bioengineering process that mimics natural cotton growth, ensuring purity and consistency without the environmental impacts of traditional farming.

How it feels

Soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic, lab-grown cotton is designed to have similar properties to traditional cotton but often offers enhanced consistency and durability. It may also have reduced water usage and lower environmental impact.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent to maintain fabric integrity. Air dry when possible; if using a dryer, set to low heat to avoid shrinkage. Avoid bleach, as it can weaken the fibers. Iron on low heat if necessary; lab-grown cotton may wrinkle less than traditional cotton but can still benefit from smoothing.
