Made in Mexico
Cactus leather was developed in Mexico by entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, who launched it in 2019 under the name Desserto. They chose nopal because it thrives on dry land, needs no irrigation and regrows after harvest.
How it's made
Mature cactus pads are cut, cleaned, mashed and dried in the sun. The dried material is processed, combined with a binder and coated onto a backing fabric, then finished with a leather-like texture.
What it's made of
Made from Nopal (prickly pear) cactus. The mature cactus pads are harvested sustainably, and the fiber is processed into a leather-like material. Cactus leather production uses minimal water and no pesticides. There is a high % of PU (plastic) in this material.
How it feels
Soft, flexible, and highly durable. It can withstand daily use and has a lifespan comparable to traditional leather, making it a popular choice for fashion and accessories.
Where it works
Ideal for Accessories (bags, belts, wallets), Apparel (jackets, shoes), and Home Decor (upholstery). Often used in sustainable luxury brands and vegan leather goods.
Caring for it
Wipe with a damp cloth for cleaning. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat. Store in a cool, dry place to preserve material quality.
