Growing a material

Mycelium has been developed as a material since the 2000s, first for packaging and insulation. In the late 2010s companies such as MycoWorks and Bolt Threads began growing it into leather-like sheets, and luxury fashion houses were among the first to use them.

How it's grown

Mycelium is cultivated on agricultural waste such as sawdust, in trays kept in dark, humid rooms. As it grows it knits into a dense mat, which is harvested, treated and finished into sheets with a leather-like surface.

How it feels

Caring for it
