Inspired by the Philippines
While working in the Philippines, Spanish leather-goods expert Dr Carmen Hijosa was struck by the environmental cost of leather, and inspired by piña, a traditional cloth woven from pineapple-leaf fibre. She developed Piñatex and founded Ananas Anam to bring it to market in the 2010s.
How it's made
After the harvest, leaves are collected and their long fibres extracted. The fibres are washed and dried, turned into a non-woven mesh, then finished and coated to create a flexible, leather-like material.
What it's made of
Made from pineapple leaf fibers, a by-product of pineapple harvesting. Piñatex production uses minimal resources and no extra water or chemicals,
How it feels
Lightweight, durable, and breathable. Piñatex has a natural grainy texture similar to traditional leather.
Where it works
Suitable for Accessories (bags, shoes, wallets), Apparel, and Home Decor items (upholstery, cushions). Common in sustainable and vegan fashion markets.
Caring for it
Clean with a damp cloth; avoid soaking. Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid excessive heat and humidity.
