The dream fibre
People have tried to weave spider silk for centuries, but spiders are territorial and make little silk. In 2012 a golden cape woven from the silk of more than a million Madagascan orb-weaver spiders went on show at the V&A in London. Producers now engineer microbes to make the silk protein instead.
How it's made
The genetic code for spider silk protein is introduced into microbes such as yeast or bacteria, which are fermented in tanks. The protein is harvested, purified and spun into fibre, mimicking what a spider does with its spinnerets.
