Lab Grown Diamond

Lab Grown Diamond

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, the same carbon crystal with the same hardness and sparkle, created in a laboratory instead of mined. In fashion they bring brilliance to jewellery, buttons and trims without the mining.

Diamonds without the mine

Scientists at General Electric grew the first reproducible synthetic diamonds in 1954. For decades they were used mainly in industry, but advances in the 2010s made gem-quality stones affordable, and lab-grown diamonds moved into jewellery and fashion.

How they're grown

Two methods dominate. High pressure, high temperature (HPHT) recreates the conditions deep in the earth. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) builds a diamond layer by layer from carbon-rich gas onto a small diamond seed. Both produce stones that are then cut and polished.
