Leather, grown
The idea grew out of tissue engineering research. In the 2010s start-ups began cultivating cells and bio-fabricating collagen to make leather-like materials, and early products have appeared in limited runs while the technology scales.
How it's made
Cells are grown in nutrient-rich conditions to produce collagen, the protein that gives leather its structure. The collagen is formed into sheets, then tanned and finished much like a conventional hide.

crafted entirely in the lab from skin starter cells, ensuring it mimics the properties of traditional leather without requiring artificial or plant “scaffolds”, which are essentially additives that interfere with the tanning process affecting finished product properties and performance.
