From café to closet

Textile makers in Taiwan pioneered coffee-ground yarn in the late 2000s, collecting spent grounds from coffee shops and embedding them into fibre. Coffee-based yarns have since appeared in activewear and outerwear around the world.

How it's made

Spent grounds are collected, dried and milled into fine particles, then blended into a polymer, often recycled polyester, before it's spun into yarn. The coffee particles stay in the fibre, where their porous structure helps absorb odour and speed up drying.
