A Toppled Spinning Wheel
James Hargreaves, an illiterate weaver and carpenter from Stanhill, Lancashire, is said to have gotten the idea after a family spinning wheel was accidentally knocked onto its side — and the spindle kept spinning upright. Before that moment, textile spinning meant one worker, one wheel, one thread. Hargreaves realized several spindles could stand in a row, all driven by a single wheel.
Eight Threads at Once
His first machine used a wooden frame with eight spindles; later commercial versions scaled to 80, even 120. He patented the design (British Patent No. 962) in 1770 — six years after building it — and his hometown of Blackburn became one of the first boomtowns of the Industrial Revolution as a direct result.

Why the Jenny Wasn't Enough on Its Own
The jenny's thread was strong enough for weft but too weak for warp — which is exactly why Richard Arkwright's water-powered frame followed just seven years later. Together, these machines moved spinning out of cottages and into purpose-built factories, laying the template for industrial manufacturing itself.
