Nylon from plants

Most nylon is made from oil, but some types can be built from plant chemistry. Nylon 11, for example, has been made from castor beans since the mid-20th century. More recently producers have found ways to make other nylons partly from renewable feedstocks such as sugars and plant oils.

How it's made

Plant-derived building blocks replace some or all of the petroleum chemicals in the recipe. They are polymerised into nylon, melted and extruded through fine spinnerets into continuous filament yarn, just like conventional nylon.

How it feels

Plant-based fabrics offer excellent moisture-wicking abilities, making them ideal for warmer climates and activewear. They are often highly durable, retaining shape and texture after multiple washes.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild, eco-friendly detergent to preserve the fabric's natural fibers. Air dry whenever possible to reduce energy use; tumble drying on low heat is suitable if necessary. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. Low iron if needed; plant-based fibers may naturally wrinkle, contributing to their natural aesthetic.
