A modern cellulose fibre

Lyocell was developed in the 1970s as a cleaner alternative to viscose, and was brought to market by the British company Courtaulds in the 1990s under the name Tencel. Today several producers make it, for everything from T-shirts to bed sheets.

How it's made

Wood pulp is dissolved in a non-toxic organic solvent and pushed through fine holes to form fibres. The solvent is recovered and reused again and again, typically more than 99% of it, so very little is wasted.

What it's made of

Made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, usually from eucalyptus trees. The production process is eco-friendly and closed-loop, meaning nearly all water and solvents used are recycled, minimizing environmental impact.

How it feels

Extremely soft, smooth, and breathable. Lyocell has excellent moisture-wicking abilities. It drapes beautifully and provides a smooth, silk-like feel, making it a popular choice for luxurious, eco-friendly apparel and textiles.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent to preserve softness and color. Air dry or tumble dry on low to avoid shrinkage. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can weaken the fibers. Low iron if needed; lyocell naturally resists wrinkles and maintains a smooth, elegant drape that often requires minimal ironing.
