Seaweed meets wood

SeaCell was developed in Germany by smartfiber AG, using brown seaweed harvested in Iceland. The seaweed is embedded in lyocell, a wood-based fibre, so its minerals and trace elements become part of the yarn.

How it's made

Seaweed is harvested, dried and milled into a very fine powder. It's added to the dissolved wood pulp before spinning, using the closed-loop lyocell process, so the seaweed is locked into the fibre rather than washed out.

What it's made of

A blend of renewable seaweed fibers, often combined with other sustainable fibers like organic cotton, Tencel, or lyocell. Seaweed is carefully harvested in a way that allows it to regenerate, ensuring sustainable sourcing. The seaweed fiber retains natural properties, making it both gentle on the skin and eco-friendly.

How it feels

Soft, smooth, and highly breathable. SeaCell fabrics are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are believed to be beneficial to the skin. The fabric is hypoallergenic, naturally antibacterial, and has excellent moisture management, making it ideal for sensitive skin and active lifestyles.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent to maintain the fiber's integrity. Air dry or tumble dry on low; excessive heat can affect the seaweed fiber’s natural benefits. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Low iron if necessary; SeaCell fabrics are often naturally wrinkle-resistant, adding to their easy-care qualities.

Certification

Often certified by OEKO-TEX® to ensure it is free from harmful substances. Additionally, SeaCell may carry certifications related to responsible sourcing and environmental impact, as its harvesting methods adhere to sustainable and regenerative practices.
