From Courtaulds to Lenzing

Lyocell was developed in the 1970s and brought to market by the British company Courtaulds as Tencel in the 1990s. The Austrian fibre maker Lenzing later acquired the business, and TENCEL™ is now one of the best-known names in wood-based textiles.

How it's made

Wood pulp from certified forests is dissolved and spun into fibre. For TENCEL™ lyocell, the solvent is recovered and reused in a closed loop, so almost none of it is released.

What it's made of

Made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, primarily from eucalyptus, beech, and spruce trees. Tencel fibers are produced through an eco-friendly, closed-loop process where nearly all solvents and water used are recycled, making it an environmentally responsible choice.

How it feels

Soft, smooth, and highly breathable. Tencel has excellent moisture-wicking abilities. It drapes well, providing a luxurious look and feel similar to silk or rayon, but with better durability.

Where it works

Ideal for a variety of uses, including Apparel (shirts, dresses, pants, activewear), Home Textiles (bed sheets, pillow covers, curtains), and Accessories (scarves, lightweight bags). Due to its softness and moisture management properties, it is also popular in loungewear and sleepwear.

Caring for it

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent to preserve softness and color. Air dry or tumble dry on low to avoid excessive shrinkage. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, which can damage the fiber structure. Low iron if needed; Tencel naturally resists wrinkles and has a smooth, luxurious drape that often requires minimal ironing.

Certification

Often certified by organizations like OEKO-TEX® and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council), ensuring it meets stringent environmental and social standards.
