Older than civilisation
Dyed wild flax fibres more than 30,000 years old have been found in a cave in Georgia, and ancient Egyptians wrapped their dead in fine linen. Phoenician traders carried it across the Mediterranean, and in the 19th century Belfast was nicknamed Linenopolis, the linen capital of the world.
From stalk to cloth
Flax is pulled from the ground and left to ret so the stalks soften, then broken and combed to separate the long fibres from the woody core. Those fibres are spun and woven. Open weaves make airy, see-through linens; dense weaves make heavyweight cloth for trousers and jackets.
