JanSport was founded in 1967 by two cousins who wanted to carry camera equipment up mountains without their shoulders giving out. They invented the external frame backpack and accidentally invented a $400 million brand. Fifty years later the same brand sells the same style to teenagers for $40. The Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration put a backpack on the runway at $3,200 and it sold out in 11 minutes. The backpack is simultaneously the most democratic carry format in the world and one of the most commercially elastic. The construction is the same. The nylon, the padded straps, the YKK zip. Only the logo changes.

The Backpack -- "JanSport Invented a $400m Brand by Solving One Problem: Shoulder Pain"
The modern backpack derives from military and mountaineering pack technology developed in the early 20th century. The external frame pack -- a rigid aluminium or steel frame with a fabric bag suspended from it -- allowed hikers and soldiers to carry heavy loads with the weight transferred to the hips rather than the shoulders. The internal frame pack, which integrated the load-bearing structure into the bag itself, became the standard for recreational use from the 1970s onwards. JanSport and Osprey in the US, Deuter in Germany, and later Arc'teryx and Patagonia defined the technical backpack as both a functional and a brand category.
Affordable China 600D polyester urban daypack: ~$55 → $221 retail. Premium China GRS recycled nylon commuter pack with laptop sleeve: ~$120 → $359-$419 retail. CMT is the largest single cost driver -- webbing, strap padding, and multiple zip operations make backpack CMT significantly higher per unit than a simple tote bag.
600D polyester for affordable/school bags. 420D nylon for premium urban and fashion packs -- lighter, better abrasion resistance, premium hand. 1000D Cordura for heavy-duty or outdoor. GRS recycled nylon for premium sustainable positioning. Always specify DWR finish on any nylon backpack -- specify on the fabric brief, not as an afterthought.
A backpack strap that fails under load can cause a fall or injury -- it is a product liability issue, not just a quality issue. All shoulder strap attachment points must be bar-tacked through a minimum 4-layer reinforced panel. Load test each strap at 15kg for 30 minutes before bulk approval. Document the test. This applies at every price point.
The fashion backpack emerged as a separate commercial category in the 1980s and 1990s. The school bag -- essentially a simplified daypack in nylon or canvas with brand graphics -- became one of the most commercially significant youth fashion items of the 1990s, driven by brands including Jansport, Eastpak, Herschel, and later Supreme and Palace. The luxury fashion backpack arrived with the Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration in 2017, which demonstrated that the construction logic of a $40 school bag and a $3,200 luxury fashion piece were identical. The difference was entirely in the material and the brand.
For independent creators, the backpack offers a specific commercial logic: it is a considered purchase at every price point, has strong utility credentials, and carries brand graphics across a large surface area. The laptop compartment and padded back panel are the two functional specifications that distinguish a commuter backpack from a fashion backpack -- and both add CMT without changing the fundamental construction family.
YKK throughout -- no exceptions. YKK #5 coil for main compartment zips. YKK #3 for organiser and pocket zips. YKK reverse coil (where zip pull is hidden) for cleaner aesthetic at premium. Zip failure is the most common backpack return reason. Non-YKK zips are not acceptable at any premium price point.
A technical bag factory with webbing bar-tack machines, zip feed systems, foam lamination press, and strap padding equipment. Not a leather goods factory. Not a canvas tote factory. China, Vietnam, and Cambodia have strong technical bag manufacturing infrastructure. Portugal for Made in Europe. Confirm factory has produced packs in your target volume range.
Duraflex and Woojin for all buckles and side-release hardware -- specify by brand name, not just "side-release buckle". ITW Nexus and YKK Saddlery for webbing hardware. Hardware specification by brand prevents factory substitution to unrated commodity hardware that will crack or jam under load.
A laptop sleeve is a padded internal compartment -- minimum 15mm EVA foam on all sides -- accessible from the top of the bag or through a dedicated back panel zip. Specify laptop size (13", 15", 16") on the tech pack as the sleeve is cut to fit. The sleeve must be suspended from the top of the bag interior, not resting on the base -- "floating" sleeve prevents laptop damage if bag is dropped.
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a finish applied to nylon and polyester fabrics that causes water to bead and roll off rather than saturating the fabric. Without DWR, a nylon backpack will absorb water and become significantly heavier in rain. Specify DWR on the fabric brief. Test: ISO 4920 spray test, minimum rating 4 after 10 wash cycles. Specify fluorine-free DWR (C6 or water-based) for premium sustainable positioning.
China for all tiers at accessible MOQ (100-500 units). Vietnam and Cambodia for volume affordable production. Portugal for Made in Europe premium positioning at lower MOQ (50-150 units). Always confirm technical bag capability specifically -- webbing bar-tack machines, foam lamination, and strap padding are not universal across all sewn goods factories.
A fashion backpack (12-20L) prioritises aesthetic -- shell fabric, colour, graphics, and form. Minimal internal organisation, light or no padding, no laptop sleeve. A technical backpack (25-35L) prioritises function -- laptop sleeve, ergonomic padded back panel, hip and sternum strap options, organiser pockets, waterproof zip options. Both use the same factory. The CMT difference is significant: fashion pack $18-30 vs commuter pack $42-78.
GRS (Global Recycled Standard) x1.15-1.20 for recycled nylon or polyester shell fabric. Bluesign for nylon fabric dyeing. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 for lining and padding materials. For hardware: confirm Duraflex/Woojin safety ratings for load-bearing buckles. REACH compliance on all materials for EU market.
HS 420292 -- backpacks and rucksacks. This applies regardless of outer material (nylon, polyester, leather, canvas). Sub-classification may depend on outer surface material for specific markets. Confirm with customs broker for EU, US, and UK duty rates.
